6/9/09     Quinn and Parks scoop awards

During a glittering ceremony last night at a top Chinese restaurant in Edinburgh, John Kelly leant forward and announced in a hushed tone (so as not to attract undue attention from the other diners) that there were a couple of awards to be made. The two beautiful and glamorous assistants duly presented the award for Young Player of the Year to Matthew Parks, who beat off a host of rivals including Neil Costley and John Kelly, and Player of the Year to Andrew Quinn.

Shocking rumours were circulating round the table that Costley's solitary vote for the junior award may in fact have come from himself. If so, it calls the anonymity and integrity of the voting system into question, and perhaps even the very fabric of our existence. That last one might be stretching it a bit.

The current skipper was unavailable for comment last night on the matter of where his vote for the same award had come from...

18/8/09     Bellevue complete unbeaten season

Bellevue 122/5 (Liddell 25*, Quinn 24, Fairfield 22, Peach 2-13)
D Mains 105/9 (J Kelly 3-13, Quinn 2-16, Osborne 27*, Peach 23)

Bellevue finished the season in style last night at Inverleith Park, seeing off D Mains by 17 runs, completing a 2-0 series win against their main rivals and ensuring a 100% record in 2009.

Hamilton, having promised to hit the first ball of each over for six and then block the rest, following Skipper Kelly's instructions to aim for 6 per over, managed the first part alright, smiting a long hop over extra cover for a maximum. Sadly, the blocking didn't go so well, as he lost his off stump three balls later.

Kenny R was the next to depart, retiring hurt when he cleverly intercepted a D Mains throw with the back of his head, leaking blood over the pitch, one of the team gloves, and my bat. Regrettably he doesn't even get into the record books as the first Bellevue player to spill blood for the team cause, Iain Wintour having beaten him to that in 2003. Although I think Kenny might have contributed more, volume-wise. Stumbling from the pitch in a daze, shirt clasped to the back of his head to stem the flow (and show off his torso), he insisted on staying to watch the remainder of our innings, team man that he is.

The two Stephens - Liddell and Fairfield, gave him some entertainment worth watching, smacking the bowling to all parts, and cantering along at over 7 an over until Fairfield was trapped in front in the ninth over. Liddell retired, triumphant, on 25 not out, whereupon Letchford and Quinn kept things ticking along, with Mike landing a great six over midwicket. The scoring petered out a little at the end, and 122 was probably 10 or so short of what might have been had a couple more batsmen clicked.

Kenny R, having gone "above and beyond" in sticking it out to the halfway mark, was about to depart for hospital, when skipper John "Douglas Jardine" Kelly informed him he could go after he'd bowled his four overs. At least he let him open the bowling, and he managed a creditable 1-26 before disappearing in the general direction of the Western.

Thereafter, the Bellevue bowlers kept a reasonably tight lid on things, and Kelly, spying a deterioration in the light, decided it was time for some inswinging yorkers, uprooting the stumps three times to finish with 3-13. Special mention to Stephen Liddell, who snared one more wicket to finish top of the bowling charts with ten for the season; to Kenny D, who fielded like a dervish once again; and to the Letch, for throwing himself this way and that to limit the damage done by some wayward bowling at times!

Tremendous effort to finish the season with a 100% record. Well done all. It's been especially pleasing to see the youth policy beginning to bear fruit, with Michael and Sharav making their debuts this season.

13/8/09     E=MCC edged out in last over

E=MCC 108/5 (Sethu 26*, J Kelly 1-14, Quinn 1-23, Parks 1-29)
Bellevue 109/6 (Parks 22*, Gompertz 22, Fairfield 21, Bhav 2-16)

7/8/09      Liddell and Roger star in big win

Bellevue 115/8 (K Roger 43*, A Quinn 25*, Gys 3-12, Schofield 2-13)
E=MCC 54 ao (S Liddell 5-4, A Quinn 3-18, S Tonge 28)

An outstanding five-for by Stevie Liddell and a brilliant knock from Kenny Roger helped Bellevue account for E=MCC in the first meeting of these sides in 2009.

Put in to bat, Bellevue started well, with several crisply-struck boundaries leading to Kenny R's dignified retiral on 26. Thereafter the wheels came off somewhat, with a procession of Bellevue batters to and from the middle, with only a pugnacious cameo from the Letch, and an elegantly-crafted 10 from young Sharav overly troubling the scorers. Sharav, playing his first game for the team, displayed a canny appetite for stealing the strike with a single off the last ball of the over. He'll need to be watched ;-)

The arrival of old stagers Kelly and Quinn restored some much-needed impetus to the innings, before Roger returned to emphasise his class with a sweetly-struck six over midwicket.

E=MCC started brightly in their innings, with one of their openers displaying a fondness for Quinn's gentle medium pace, crashing him through mid-on for several fours. Gompertz shut up one end with some tight line and length, and once Tonge had departed on 26, the batting was shown to lack any depth. Liddell duly ran amok, taking two wickets with return catches, trapping Jude in front, then castling Barnes, before the perfect leg stump yorker accounted for the returning Tonge. Am grateful someone has at last emulated P Friend's bowling feat...

Lovely stuff. Keep it up!
