Bible Study Nov/Dec 2011
Studies from Ecclesiastes
Introduction
"Everything has been figured out, except how to live"JP Sartre
The writer of Ecclesiastes asks:
In the short time we have on earth, how can we live meaningful lives?
This timeless and universal question finds some interesting answers in this strange and yet strangely comforting book of the bible. The writer is, throughout the book, firmly a believer in God. Yet his belief doesn’t prevent him from this existential wrestling exercise. "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless!"
He asks whether all the things we do in life- work, achieve, get wealthy, enjoy ourselves, have families, is of lasting value. He contrasts two approaches to life: the ‘wise’ and godly path, and the ‘foolish’, godless one. He asks if there is anything better about one than the other-and comes up with some surprising answers.
