John 6: 25-59 and Exodus 16: 1-18
Abstract/Summary:
Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty’ (John 6:35). Coming to Jesus and believing in him are necessary steps in finding what truly satisfies. Both the manna in the desert (Exodus 16) and the feeding of the 5000 (John 6) were divine provisions of nourishment, but only Jesus truly satisfies our spiritual need. This passage highlights the seal of approval which Jesus has from God his Father, and challenges us to consider what coming to him and believing in him really means. As we respond to the open invitation to come to him (6:35) we realise that we are also drawn by God (6:44) who is saving us by his grace. The sermon concludes with a challenge to come to Christ and to worship God for the ‘incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.’
