In difficult and dark times we might wonder whether God cares about us, and whether He will provide for our needs. In this passage, we see God at work extending his grace and practical care towards a woman who has no son. We are challenged to trust in the God who gives, trust in the God who takes away, and to trust in the God who defeats death. Through the miracle of a son raised from the dead, we are pointed to Jesus who defeated death for his people. If we have trusted in him, we know that we will be raised from the dead never to die again. This is our great hope even in the most difficult times of life.
