Advent Reader: Zechariah's Song
Luke 1:67-80
This second half of Luke chapter 1 is full of song and celebration. First from Mary and now from the elderly priest Zechariah after the birth of his son John.
Zechariah of course was left unable to speak after doubting the words of the Angel foretelling of his son.
Now the child is born, named John, and Zechariah is able to speak once again, we hear his song of delight, celebration and praise all wrapped up and lifted to God. There is prophecy mixed in with his praise, signposting us to Jesus as our salvation, redeeming us from our enemies.
We read his praises to God for the unexpected gift of this completely unexpected child. And we hear his prophecy that John was much more than just a son, this is the man who would, in time herald Jesus coming.
We read this passage and are filled with the joy and excitement that Zechariah must have experienced for himself and his wife but the understanding that this was part of God’s almighty plan coming to fruition. John will prepare the way for all people to be saved.
‘Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation.’
Perhaps, in the midst of the Christmas festivities, as we speak to those we know who don’t know Jesus, we too can herald Christ’s incarnation, speak (or sing) of how He has come into our hearts, forgiven our sins and continues to guide our feet as we journey through life.
May you too be filled with the Holy Spirit during this Advent season as we prepare once again to celebrate His coming.
