Luke 18:1-8 - Devotion to Prayer

I like the opening verse in this passage as it tells us the meaning of the parable!

  • Disciples of Jesus are to ‘always pray’ and ‘not give up’!

In the previous chapter, Jesus had been teaching His disciples to forgive freely; to trust God even with a small amount of faith; to live grateful lives; and, to stay ready for the sudden arrival of God’s Kingdom.

In this passage we see that prayer is a vital part of our lives as we seek to live this out.

  • We should pray persistently.

The widow kept coming back – this was not a one-off. Her return visits to the judge represent a continual and consistent turning to God even when nothing seems to be changing.

  • We should trust God’s character.

The unjust judge eventually acts, how much more will our just and gracious God do in response to prayer? Our prayers rest on who God is.

  • We should stay faithful.

Our perseverance in prayer is an expression of our faith as much as it is about receiving answers. Please pray today for all the believers at Bellevue Chapel that God will strengthen us to be faithful in prayer.

'Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.'
