Luke 18:35-43 - Belief Without Knowing

As humans, we all have a tendency to take things at face value. We see things and accept them as we see them, without delving deeper, or understanding the meanings behind them. The blind, however, as a necessity, develop their other senses so they can understand what they cannot see; a greater sense of smell perhaps, or better listening skills to make up for their lack of sight.

In this passage, the blind beggar instinctively realises the truth of who Jesus really is, calling Him ‘Son of David’ as prophesied in Isaiah chapter 11. When Jesus asks the beggar what do you want me to do for you, He receives a simple answer that shows complete faith and trust. ‘Lord, I want to see’. Had the beggar heard stories of Jesus’s other miracles? More than likely, and the beggar trusted that Jesus could restore his sight.

After he was healed, the beggar knew who to thank- he praised God. Do we thank God when we are healed, whether physically, emotionally or spiritually? Perhaps this Easter, we should all remember to thank God, and praise Him for giving us the greatest gift of all, that of knowing the Lord Jesus, and having the sure and certain knowledge that even though we see darkly now, one day we will see Him face to face.
