Luke 19:11-27 - Investing Wisely

Let’s meet the characters in this parable and the part they play:

  • A man of noble birth/The master – soon to be made King.
  • The servants – entrusted with the master’s wealth and given the responsibility of “putting it to work” in his absence.
    • Two of the servants are obedient and “put the money to work” resulting in a higher return for the master. They are rewarded for their efforts. The third servant is disobedient and does nothing productive with his allocation. His portion is then taken from him and given to the servant with the greatest return.
  • The subjects – they hate the man of noble birth and actively seek to prevent him being made King. The consequences for them are catastrophic. Their rejection of the King ultimately leads to their destruction.

Jesus will return and each person will be called to give account of themselves. This parable shows us that we have important choices to make about how we live in the meantime:

Are we going to accept Jesus as the true King or reject Him? We can clearly see the life and death consequences for those who reject the true King – it is not a decision to be taken lightly.

For those who accept Jesus there is work to be done. While we wait for Jesus to return, will we choose to be faithful servants and use the resources He has given us for the good of His Kingdom? Or will we be like the servant who disobeyed and fail to use our God given gifts and resources in a way that pleases Him? The good news is that we are not called to do the work on our own – if you aren’t sure if you are using your gifts, talents and resources in a way that pleases God, take time to ask Him about it now.
